Sande, a women's initiation society found in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and the Ivory Coast is one society that initiates girls into adulthood by rituals including female circumcision, alleged to confer fertility, instill notions of morality and proper sexual comportment, and to maintain an interest in the well-being of its members throughout their lives.    The Sande society is said to champion women's social and political interests while promoting their solidarity just like the complimentary Poro society for men.
